Thanks to Nike and Joe tor an i1pressive hard drive de■o asell' The ATARI is very capable ot being hooked up to powerful co1puter devices such as hard drives, and the de■o reaftir1ed this, Well, those of you who stuck around saw RANPAGE load up and freeze with so■e very pretty ■usic playing in the background but not 1uch else, Glen was going to do so■e further testing with it, hopefully he has co1e up with soeething by now, Ti■e will tell , we will see at the next 1eeting, I was able to work out at the software sale at the State Fair and noticed one thing: there are still PLENTY of ATARI people out there, I m, ir,to 1any people buying ATARI 8-Bll software and 1any of the1 were very interested in the club, Hopefully we'll see a few of those at the next 1eetin9, Co1ing up, we have the birthday ■eeting in June and a party planning co11ittee is already getting ready to throw the bash' It you want to be involved please coae to the next 1eeting to discuss details, l would like to get another good Ga ■e Festival going like the one we had last year except include 1ore people, Perhaps we could do that this 1onth, i1pro1ptu though it ■ ay be, or do a big one in June, I a■ a bit short on ■ ajor ATARI news this 1onth, The s1all trickel of ■ail I was getting dropped short, I wi ll continue to keep everyone intor■ ed at the 1eet1ngs, I hope to see everyone at the next 1eeting 1 SUl■er· fever is bound to start so1eti1e and I would like to get the club's 1ajor business taken care of in these next two ■onths here , PLEASE try to join us at the next ■eeting, Happy Co■puting! Atari 8-bit Inter-BBS Nrtworking? "ore than one person is ru1ored to be 'looking into the feasibility of the various 8-bit BBS progra1s nrtworking with each other, and possibly even Fore1-ST boards, The 8-bit progra1s of which I a1 aware of that are now 'capable' of networking are: FoReft-XEP, Exprrss! Pro, Oasis, and Puff II BBS, Thrrr 1ay be ■ore, but I don't know about the■ - yet! Of these, only FoRe"- IEP and Express! Pro can 'thread' their networked 1essage bases, So1e of the proble1s which need to be overco1e are: different 1ethods and protocols used, different 1axi1u1 1essage sizes, different procedures used for Networking, and the different for1ats of the packets, I will try to find out ■ore infor1at ion about this and pass it on in a future article, New Stuff Co1ing? I have nev!r figured out whether this is because they are i1pressed wit h what they are looking at or because they just don't understand why so1eone would put all that stuff on his di sk drive, "aybe I'• the first really lazy person they have ever ■ et, Naw , ,, I think they're i1oressed with the high technology ,
All of IV 1050's have one or two drive select switches and a RESET button on the front, The one 1050 I own that isn't a Happy drive has a write protect switch and acco1panving LED on the front, Two of 1y Happy 1050 1 s have Happy Controller boards which add two ■ore switches and an LED, There is nothing co1plicated about any of these switches - except, 1aybt 1 for the ones on the Happy controller board, In case anyone is interested, the RESET button RESETs the 555 ti1er which causes the drive to RESET, While the RESET button would probably be usless on a stock 1050 1 it is handy for Happy and US doubler drives since both upgrades occasionally forget that they are upgrades, Especially when used with SpartaDOS since Sparta kicks the ■ into slow speed so1eti1es when it encounters a disk error, Here's how I instal l 1y drive sel ect and RESET switches, 'Parts: 1 - SPOT c,nter off toggl e ~witch, 1 - nor1ally open pushbutton switch, so1e wire and so1e solder, Figure 1 is a view of the back left corner of the 1050 1other·board, This vi ew assu1es that the board is upside down and t he front of the board is facing you, -------------- :s10 plug: I23 o o" ow w

Figure I Botto■ of 1050 1otherboard To install the switch, open up the drive by re1oving the six phillips screws fro■ the botto ■ of the drive, Re1ove the top cover then the front plate, Next re1ove the screws that hol d the 1otherboard to the bot to1 of the plastic drive housing and l ift up the 1otherboard while carefully bending out the two plastic ears that hold the sides of the board down in the front, Now the i1portant part, You 1ust decide where you want to 1ount the drive select switch, I settled on a spot about two inches to the right et the power LED next to the on/off switch, Once you have decided where you want to 1ount the switch check carefully to bt certain that everything will fit ok when you go to put the drive back together, Nyself, I have never put a switch in the wrong place, Well , 1aybe just once, (Ok, ok! I never said I was honest!) Go ahead and 1ount the swi tch then run a wire fro■ the center pin of the toggle sMitch to pin 5 of the drive se lect sw itch as depicted in figure 1, Run a wi re fro■ one of the end pol es of the toggle switch to pin 3 of the dr ive select switch, Run a wire fro■ the other end pin of the toggle switch to pin 6 of the drive select switch, Now when the toggle swi tch is in the center position, the drive is set to drive 1, In one of the other positions it is drive 2 and the last swit ch position sets the drive to D4: ,
If you want to be able to 1ake the drive D3: fro• the front, you can install a SPST switch and run a wire fro1 the two end poles of the SPOT switch you just installed to the two poles of the SPST switch, Turning the SPST switch on and setting the original toggle switch to either D2: or D4: will 1ake the drive respond as D3:, Now for the reset button, Here is the layout of the 555 ti1er chip looking at the botto1 of the 1otherhoard with the front of the drive facing you, 1234 0 N O0
