Newz From the Prez February 1993 The officers ••• they are a changin'! Now we have a new treasure r , who I am sure is going to do a fabulous job ■ Mr ■ Leitner has provided lots of energy for this club in our various endeavors and will be wonderful to have him on the staff. Hope you didn't mind the surprise nomination too much, Greg!
and if necessary, visits to people within the club who are experiencing computer difficulties ■ I think this is one way that we could expand our club's services to those that maybe cannot make every meeting. If you would like to be of assistance, please think about this before the meeting and we will be taking volunteers for this ambitious project,
Be sure you attend the next meeting as we will probably have a little bit of formalized voting yet to get out of the way. I also would like to discuss the possibility of a SPACE movie night ■ There has been some unique movie discussions on the SPACE BBS and I think it would be a unique break in our routine, especially if our movie had a computer theme.

•••••••••••••••• Minutes of SPACE MEETING by Michael Weist Meeting opened at 7:40 p■m■ All officers present except Sherm Erickson, our Vice president and Co-Sysop ■ Had important business to attend to ■
Mike declined because of his schedule, Nathan Block nominated Oreg Leitner ■ Greg accepts nomination, Mike Weist nominated Nathan Block, Nathan declined, If Greg Leinter is elected in February '93 election he will set-up -account at TCF Bank by house in West St, Paul, Mn,
Nathan Block opened the meeting by welcoming the membership and guest to the meeting. He introduced the officers ■
Joe Danko suggested a BBS back-up system for our BBS ■ The cost would be around $110 at Best buy, -Glen mentior,ed our treasury has around $800 in it, Nathan asked the membership who had modems and used the BBS, A member asked if the club could have a raffle to pay for this, Also this member mentioned if this UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) doesn't meet the club's needs that other things can be looked into,
Nathan talked about the Space/Mast bylaws and the only mutual connection that was there, referring to the treasurer, Allan Frink ■ He said that the Bob Puff event in the past demonstrated the need for the club to have it's own treasurer ■ Nathan mentioned talking to Mast and they had voted on having separated bylaws ■ Which means being separate from space, Nathan presented a copy of their new bylaws, Space will have their own bylaws, which means modifying the present ones, Space will set-up own treasurer to be present at meetings and pays the bills, Larry
Mike Fitzpatrick asked the membership He want they wanted to see on the BBS, asked them if they wanted to see more games or more messages bases, He asked for input,

asked if we needed a do this, Nathan mentioned that Mast had a balance of $14, Mast had voted to have separate bylaws in December '92, Space decided this to in November '92 , Larry said the separate account shouldn't be considered a split account, but a n~w account!t was mentioned that a good bank should be checked on for Space's account, The account should be by the treasurer's house whoever is elected as treasurer , Nominations will be put in next newsletter to make other members aware of voting for treasurer, It was voted on to have a separate account,

In closing to this meeting Nathan Block mentioned that the person that had problems with their Diablo printer could see the person at the For Sale Table next to the Firzpatick's table who had a Atari 850 interface to hook up to printer to check it out, Greg Leinter volunteered to make copies of the Bob Puff event tape free to the membership, All they would have to do is bring in a blank tape ■ Meeting ended at 8:20 p,m,

Some of you might of stayed home to watch the Super bowl, worked, skiing or even went ice fishing for the day ■ Well for some of us, we went to the Greyhawk GT ■ The

started at lp ■ m ■ in the It was held at Steve Nelson's place ■ Nathan, Kurt, Wayne, Dan, Gary, Mike Weist, Tim and Rachel showed up at the GT, We all had fun chatting and playing computer games with one another ■ then we all pitched in to buy four Pizza Hut big foot pizzas ■ The pizzas were a variety of Sausage Canadian bacon, mushroom, pepperoni ■ Steve beat Wayne at the game of chess and Rachel beat Mike Weist at the game of rummy ■ afternoon ■
A ftw w11k1nd1 •go I wa1 at tht home of Mike Schmidt ■ I have a switch box to run two printers, but needed a cable to run a second printer ■ It would be nice to go to the store and buy a standard I ■ B ■ M ■ cable and plug it in to the switch box and it would work, but that wasn't the case ■ What was found out was the pin-outs were different going from one end of the cable to the other ■ Mike took the one cable I got from him that he had used on a switch box and with a volt meter figured out what the pin-outs were ■ RS232 to Centronics ■ This how it is set-up ■■•

Well another meeting is soon approaching. Also the Mid-Winter Madness is going to be held in Feb ■ 1 92 and I'm sure that volunteers will be asked to work at the Space Booth . It is a fun experience to be there ■

Well, anyway, I am now running two printers, one I use for word processing and one for labels ■ Mike treated me to a can of pop and a interesting Atari pinball game ■ Mike has moved all of his computer systems and everything else into a new spacious bigger room ■ The old room wasn't so bad but becaus• of my size it was kind of hard to move around ■ I really enjoy visiting members and fooling around on the computer ■ Makes for a fun time ■ Thanks Mike! For Mike's help I helped him move wood for the wood burner he has. I hope I didn't wipe out his basement window opening to bad ■
I suppose the Space members have other hobbies besides fooling around with computers like sports , photography, cooking, writing, gardening etc ■ But unlike fooling around with computers a person can't do lots of the other hobbies year around or they are too expensive ■ Being in the Space club software and hardware can be very reasonable in cost ■ Well, anyway it seems whenever I get the chance I am working on the computer ■ Either on the BBS, playing a game program, using the word processor, or at a members hous e hav i ng fun ■

Am still trying to track down some very persistent bugs in the system; they are minor but irksome to some users and myself• It should be noted that this should not effect the use of the BBS by the average caller, While on the subject of bugs in the system; if you find one please leave e-mail describing what has occurred and where, Also, please be patient as it sometimes takes awhile to track the little bugger down and fix the problem, Now to the issue(s); to be discussed at the February meeting, Just what do we want from our BBS, A couple of suggestions have been put forth, The area that will cause the greatest discussion, I think, will be online entertainment, If the club opts for online entertainment such items as: User online time limits; Member only access; Type(s) of entertainment; r,eed to be addressed, ! am sure th.at YOl\ can also thir1k of other issues to be discussed so bring them to the next SPACE meeting and bring them up.
How To?? A 1200XE With Internal BASIC by Rich Mier, SPACE The Club Newsletter has been a little lacking lately so I thought I'd throw out a short "How To" article, Okay, you have this nice 1200XL with the great keyboard but it also has these strange •Quirks', It's not compatible with the older 8001400's, nor is it compatible with tbe newer XLIXE's, AND it doesn't have Internal BASIC, Well here's the answer to your dream, A 1200X'E', with Fully Fuctional 'F'uction Keys and Internal BASIC! ! Here are the Parts you will need: 800XLIXE OS ROM, PIN C061598 $10,00 800XLIXE OS MMU, PIN C061618 $14,00 Rev C BASIC ROM, PIN C024947A S14,00 28 Pin I,C, Socket ? 30 Ga, Wire; Small Wattage Soldering iron; Solder Removal tool (Solder Sucker) and plenty soldering experience, The first 3 parts are available from BEST Electronics 2021 The Alameda, Suite 290 San Jose, Ca, 95126, Phone# (408)-243-6950, accept Plastic they DON'T Sorry, (Credit Car·ds) and prefer Money Orders, Shipping is Free IF the or·der is $25 or greater, Another way to get the parts is if you The have a 600XL with Socketed I,C,'s, only problem here is that you will get Rev B BASIC which is a little 'Buggy', (NOTE: A FEW had the Rev C,) It's up to you, NO, you can't use the l ■ C ■ 's from a BASIC Cart, They have 2 smaller ROM's instead of a single ROM,

Before I go on, I must give credit to the persons that actually came up with this modification, They are Jason Hedrick, "Modifying the 1200XL" and Bob Woolley, "Adding a Parallel I/0 Buss to a 1200XL", I'm only trying to condense the change to a straight forward modification, I have done one and it works great, I won't go into dissasembling the 1200XL and all directions are with the Mother Board in front of you, Cart, slot to the left, The first thing to do is to get rid of resitor, R63 (100 ohm), This is the reason a XM301 Modem or a P:R:Connection won't work, It's just behind the SIO Connector at the top of the board ■ There is a gap to the left of it and the marking is visible on the board ■ Short it out with a wire soldered across it, If you want, remove it and solder a wire in it's place, Now, the harder stuff:
Remove U12 and U13, the 24 pin chips on the left side of the board, (OS ROM's) Remove the 24 Pin Socket, U13 replace it with the 28 Pin Socket, board has all the holes in it already,

Install the XL/XE OS ROM in U13, to the left the same as the old were installed, Remove Jumper W6 (Right of U13), Add wire, Upper Via of W6 to U21, Pin 23 (CPU), Rather then connecting to a pin, use the Via to the right of Cap, C12 which is to the right of U14, (This is Address bit A13,) Remove I,C, U14 (20 Pin) and install new MMU I,C, There are 6 Jumper positions right and above U12, Change them only W9, W11 and W12 have the installed,

BASIC ROM; Lift pins 21 and 24 and attach a 1 1/2 inch wire to each lifted pin, Install the ROM in U12, pin 1 to the left, pin 21 and 24 sticking out, Wire on pin 2i goes to the Via, Left end of W7 jumper position, Wire on pin 24 goes to the bottom of or top of C11, the 2 Cap's just to left of U12 and U13 (+5 Volts),

One more wire; On the bottom of the Board (Solder Side), U14-18 (MMU) to U23-11 (PIA), Note Here: If a 256K Upgrade is installed later, this wire will have to be installed on the top of the t,oar·d because the upgrade requires U23-11 to be lifted and a 2nd wire added, Okay, before you put it all back together, plug in your monitor and power and turn it on, It should come up with the BASIC prom.bt "READY", If not, Recheck EVERYTHING you did, If it works, and it Should, put it all back together and GO! You now have a 1200XE! Now you too can hold down OPTION when you BOOT to disable BASIC and SpartaDOS can turn BASIC on of off. Also, all of the . special keys of the 1200XL are still useable,
