From the Editor August is generally a slow month for user groups. I'd like to take this time to remind each of you that without your articles, there wouldn't really be a newsletter coming out each month. So remember -- the next time you get a new piece of hardware or software, consider writing about your experiences with it for the rest of us. In this issue is a copy of the latest club bylaws. These are up to date as of the last changes in November of last year. Some of the club .members have been asking how much it really takes to put together a typical issue of the newsletter. Here's what the breakdown looks like each month (costs are valid for the past several months, including Z-Net): printing 250 copies of the newsletter $175 mailing 150 copies of the newsletter LIO. $245 dues used per newsletter income from advertising income from 2-Net distribution

This means that we are paying about $30 per month to distribute the other copies of the newsletter each month (or $15 for SPACE and $15 for MAST). These ·extra· copies go out to people buying Atari hardware and software. They are •advertising• for SPACE and MAST. New members are made aware of the club through the newsletter. Remember, you club dues pay for the newsletter. That works out to about $1.25 per issue. We will always try to bring you the best information we can ... again, the more you contribute in articles, the better your newsletter can be.

News from the MAST Pres. By Jim Schulz Well, August has finally arrived and ihe end of another summer is just about on us. MAST is still going strong this summer. We have had two great meetings so far and the best is yet to come .... So let's get going, first last month, then this month, the future, and finally some miscellaneous notes .... Last month, we had our second annual membership appreciation night. If you missed it this year, doni miss out on a good meeting of bargain DOM prices and a number of raffle prizes as well. We had so many good prizes this year that in some ways, it was hard to choose a grand prize. The only downside of the meeting was that it got a little out of hand. The members were so hot to get their DOMs and raffle tickets for the drawing that the normal meeting sections of the meeting just fell apart. For this, I will take the blame. Attendance also was not as good as it had been the previous months as well. The summer months have always been a poor attendance period for MAST as well as SPACE. Thank yous are in order for Allan and Dave for helping out and all of the members who attended as well. The World of Atari video was also shown as well. More on that later.... Now on to this month ..... This month, we will hold another of our twice annual MidiMaze sessions. This time, we are not playing for prizes, but for fun and involvement. We will divide the group up into a number of groups and play among the members in your group. Everyone who brings their computer will play!! Those who don't bring their computer can also play as well, but you will have to sub for those who need a break. If you don't bring your computer, bring your own joystick for that extra advantage. So what is MidiMaze??? Well, it's a game where you might it out with or against your other ST members to the elusive happy face which is them as well as you ..... Confused??? Yes, it is a little hard to understand. Just come and you will get the picture. All are welcome, if nothing else to watch. This will be a majority of the meeting, but we will also have the normal DOMs and of course, news and rumors as well. Come to one of the more interesting meetings of the year. Finally, get practiced up!!! We have already been challenged by the Fargo/Moorhead ST group to a MidiMaze shootout. They say that they are the best in the state. That remains to be seen. The question is in what state???? ..... . The future ...... Currently planned for September is a meeting to discuss and show off the features of TOS 1.4. I received my set of developer EPROMs right before the last meeting and I am now running 1.4. See what the future operating system look like. Also bring along your favorite software and see if and how it works. I have found a couple of programs that don, run already on the new TOS 1.4 so check out your software and see if it works. This should be a very interesting meeting. Coming in October, we will hopefully look at the new PC Ditto II and the Spectre GCR. Both of these are to be released in August, but they have been delayed before. Expect this demo in either October or November. If the emulators don't make it, we will go with ST enhancers. We will show off Turbo ST, Universal Item Selector(Version 3 coming in September), Neodesk, and more ...... Programs and possible hardware that make the ST better. Some of the hardware accelerator boards are out and maybe we can get one in for a demo as well. Also don't forget that nominations and elections are coming in October and November as well. And with a possible swap meet thrown for good measure. As you can see, MAST is going strong and moving .......

Page 2 Speaking of meetings, also don't forget the MAST+ programmers meeting and the new Midi meeting which is just starting. Last month, we again ran into problems. This time, the bank called us and needed Tuesday night and we moved back to Monday night again. As I write this, we are scheduled to meet on Tuesday. The MIDI interest for some reason is not showing. We had one Midi member show up this month. I will be getting some advertising out soon to help, but if you are interested, please show up this month or indicate your interest at the MAST meeting. We are working on a way to come up with another room and night as well for Midi. If you are interested in the Midi group, give either Eric Hopper or Dave Meile a call. Let's get this new group rolling ......

SPACE / MAST Newsletter • August 1989 Next, blank disks .... We do again have blank disks. Blank double-sided disks are $0.80 each and we go guarantee them. If you find a disk that won't format, we will swap for a good one. Also we have 3.5" over-the-top labels as well for 100 for $2.00. Just one more service of MAST. Next, magazines.... Well, I now have all of the magazines and they should be ready for checkout this month. The last one added was the infamous Current Notes. We now have START, ST-Log, Current Notes, Atari Explorer, ST Informer, ST World, and ST Xpress. I am also looking into getting a new magazine for the ST as well called the Shareware Connection. I should have my first issue for viewing at the next meeting. This magazine reviews and comments on ST Shareware programs and tells you where to get it.

updated to run under 1.4. But don't let these shy you away from the new TOS. It is too good not to buy when available. Also Atari has already found and fixed two bugs with an AUTO program, and released a mouse accelerator, a hard drive cache program, and a program to load boot programs and accessories even faster. Things looking good for 1.4!!!! Now on to other stuff ..... First, the missing video. Well, it seems that the video was sent with postage due to the wrong address around the first part of June. After it was returned, it sat in their office before they resent it a second time after I complained again. How they got my address wrong is beyond me. It was on both of the messages sent, in the letter to them, and on the check as well. But in any case, we now have the video. It is not as good as expected, but it does show the Ditto II board, the Spectre GCR and a number of other new products. We will probably be showing the video again in October for those who missed it the first time .... Next, MAST branches out... In the last month, I have been signing MAST up with a number of user group offers. Here is a sample .... Word Perfect - a new COJ)¥...Of Word Perfect and newsletters, Practical Solutions - for $25.00, a new copy of Video Key with more products for free as they are reviewed, Current Notes - discounted subscriptions to the Current Notes magazine, BIX discounted memberships and two free signons for news for the BBS and newsletter, and Sierra On-Line - a video of their games and music. So watch for these on other stuff coming soon ..... Well, that's it for August. The envelope is empty again, but don't despair. It looks quite interesting for the month of September as the envelope crystal ball looks ahead. Envelope crystal ball????? Well, that's it!!! Last Nite

by Dave Cole At times, you may think that I am crazy an~ irrational, just like the average megalomaniac, but I am perfectly sane. I am ·hocking· my 8bit equipment for a 1040ST (new). Don't worry, I've kept my promise of NOT hocking my 8-bit equipment for an Amiga. I DO keep my promises! Anyway, even when I get the ST, I won't stop with the 8-bit. I'll always have one around with me somewhere! I'll continue to write to companies urging them to make software for the 8-bit not because the 8-bit is one of the better machines built , (built Ford tough, here), but I personally like it. Although it may be sometime until I finally get it (hopefully not within 100 years) , but I will ALWAYS help the 8-bit until the inevitable end. Even when Atari ends the 8· bit (that's the inevitable), I'm sure that the USER-GROUPS will keep the 8-bit going longer than the ADAM • a~d I'll_ be there . helping, too. Nor will I quit calling the 8-b1t BBSes, they are the BEST BBSes I have ever called. I know some who have, but that's not my decision. Anyway, I give great thanks to SysOp AMOS JACKSON and Co-SysOp_C_arl Towberman for getting the HD back online. They are doing a SPLENDID job working on the BBS.

Well I've seen some new software for the 8· bit which have good ( almost ST like graphics) such as AIRBALL. The graphics in this most bizarre game are pretty good even though the "dragons· on the ST look better. But we can't have everything. But Atari is doing a great job in putting software for the XEGS • too bad they're making it a game machine. Same with some of the St stuff, too. People forget that the game equipment is from the ATARI GAMES (Im) division of ATARI, not the ATARI COMPUTER division. This new game thing coming out, with the 3" screen with headphones that will kick Nintendo's (you know what) will sell VERY good if they ad~ertise it. But I wis~ they don't advertise II as more people will think that ATARI, not ATARI GAMES is doing it! If ATARI puts the word GAMES back in, maybe people would think that there is a difference in the two! But they don't. What's worse, I still hear that the STGS will replace the XEGS. If this happens, Atari MAY drop the 8-bit line. I CERTAINLY HOPE NOT! (meaning that I don't want them to drop the 8-bit forever.) If they drop, then we 8-bitters must keep working hard to

stay alive • look what the ADAM people did? They're still around, aren't they? Well, no matter what seems to be happening, I will NEVER abandon the 8-bit. Even when I get the ST, I will still attend SPACE and MAST meetings • although you won't see me try to buy every 8-bit thing I can buy with my income ($5 a week until I get a job!) But I won't abandon the 8-bit at all. Some may say otherwise but I will not. I started out with the 8-bit a~d if anyone makes a suggestion on a computer (their first computer) that they buy, I'd say "Go for the Atari 130XE computer." Well, you'll see me and 4 or 5 big boxes with me at the next meeting! Just call me "Dave the Peddler"! One last thing, I will never say •Adios· to the 8-bit!

SPACE 8 BIT SOFTWARE LIBRARY NEWS

by Joe Danko, Disk Librarian I would like to start off the news trus month with a little briefing on how the SPACE SOFTWARE LIBRARY operates. My name is Joe Danko and the collection and organization of public domain software for distribution is my responsibility. I am ably assisted by Carl Towberman who also is the SYSOP of the SPACE computerized Bulletin Board System. I gather and test the software and Carl does the mass copying. At the meetings, Carl does most of the distribution work and I try to make sense out of disk contents and operate demonstrations. Most of the software is gleaned from Compuserve and Genie, two large computer timesharing services that have large Atari special interest sections that maintain huge software libraries for the use of enthusiasts such as us. Both of these services charge an hourly fee for connect time. Most of our library consists of Disks-Of-the-Month collections of random types of software and a smaller percentage is special purpose application disks. Profits collecte~ from the sale of these disks is the club's main source of revenue other than annual membership dues.

This month there is no traditional disk-ofthe-month. But do not despair, here is what has become available for August of 1989: PRINTSHOP GRAPHICS COLLECTION:

Page 3 SPACE's old collection has been merged with the collection we inherited from TAIG plus some some from other sources plus a new collection called PRINTSHOP HANDBOOK. There is also a limited number of borders and one font. This is all contained on 16 disk sides for a total of about 2000 different graphics files The disks are organized into 8 double sided units with nearly all having 128 files on a side. These disks will sell for $4 each. At the August meeting the 8 disk set will sell for $20. If we run out of stock, we will fill prepaid orders at the Septembe~ l!leeting. We will give $2 credit for each onginal SPACE PRINTSHOP GRAPHICS disk returned at the meeting. PRINTSHOP UTILITY DISK I PSU Print Shop Utilities is kind of a DOS for PRINTSHOP files. It can RENAME, DELETE CONVERT between DOS and PRINTSHOP file formats, display and print DIRECTORIES and display and print files. Included are a number of DOS format graphics, borders and a font. PSPIC This is one of several programs that will print a visual 'directory' of graphics files. It will read a PRINTSHOP graphics disk and print 64 graphics on a page with the name of each file. FLIPPER2 Allows the user to 'flip' a PRINTSHOP graphics image vertically and/or horizontally. SHOPTOOL This routine will display PRINTSHOP graphics and convert between DOS and PRINTSHOP formats. SHOPGEM Another PRINTSHOP 64-to-a-page graphics printing program optimized for STAR GEMINI/SG-10 printers. SHOPEPS Same program optimized for EPSON. PSPRINT Yet another 64-to-a-page printer. SHOPLAB Prints labels with text and PRINTSHOP graphics. PRINTSHOP UTILITY DISK II: CUTELABELS Prints labels with text and PRINTSHOP graphics and allows optional fonts. A. large number of fonts are included on the disk. PGRAPHS Displays PRINTSHOP graphics anywhere on a GRAPHICS MODE 8 screen. They can even be overlaid. Then the entire screen can be saved as a standard 62 sector picture file.

Page 4 The PRINTSHOP UTILITY DISKS will sell for $5 a pair at the August meeting. If stock runs out, prepaid orders may be picked up at the September meeting. The normal price will be $5 each or $8 for the pair. DETERM 1.59: A terminal program with advanced features such as drop-down menus and loadable extension modules. This program has been around for a while but suffered from random crashes until this latest level. A SPARTADOS shell is included which opens a screen where SPARTADOS can be accessed from within the terminal programs. Several file transfer protocols are included. Extended files may be loaded that allow use of COMPUSERVE OUICK-B and YMODEM file transfers. Also available is a HELP file system. DETERM Sell for $5.

If you're interested in graphics, you can feel safe. MouseBall did work fine on Degas Elite. You'll find it a pleasure to use. It seems logical to assume the MouseBall would work on Spectrum, or other drawing programs.

Mouseball 11 by Ron Knights (aka: Jim Harris) One nice thing about the Atari ST is the ability to use the mouse to point and click your way through corn plex operations and programs. If you have used other computers, you can appreciate the mouse. Of course, the mouse takes up desk space. EArthur Brown Company offers an alternative to the mouse in the Mouseball I1. Let's define the MouseBall, before we begin our review. Basically, it is a converted Wice Command Control Trackball. The most obvious alterations are the addition of a second, smaller button, and a rnouseport. The second 6uftofi duplicates lhe right rn-ouse button action, and the rnouseport allows you to connect your mouse to the back of the MouseBall. This way you can use the mouse buttons with one hand and the cursor/pointer of the rnouseball with the other hand. This connection allows you to have the mouse on one side of the computer, and the Mouse Ball on the other. The MouseBall buttons are disabled when this connection is made. The Mouse Ball does a great job of replacing the mouse. You will find no problems pointing, clicking, dragging, etc. It appears that some internal modifications were made to get the MouseBall to duplicate the functions of the mouse. An unmodified Trackball was quite awkward when it came to moving the cursor. This same problem did not occur when playing games with the Trackball. In addition, the lack of a second mouse button made some programs such as Flash, impossible to use unless there was a command to shuttle back and forth between the first and second screens. One obvious test of the Mouse Ball was to see if it could take the place of a joystick, Trackball or mouse in games. There are only

To summarize the review, I'd say the MouseBall is an excellent replacement for the mouse. It works smoothly, has two buttons, and an external rnouseport for flexibility. But don't get rid of your favorite joystick or trackball, because the Mouse Ball doesn't play games.

BYLAWS OF THE SPACE/MAST COMPUTER CLUB OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA ARTICLE I NAME

Section 1. The name of this club shall be the St.Paul Atari Computer Enthusiasts / Minne.so.ta t.taJi s,: (SPACE/MAST), an independent computer user group. Section 2. SPACE is the 8-bit computer group. MAST is the 16-bit computer group.

These officers shall perform the duties prescribed by these_ bylaws and by the parliamentary authority adopted by the club. Section 2. The treasurer shall keep two sets of books, one for each group. Section 3. After the close of business for the November meetings, the nominations for treasurer will be closed and the nominating committees shall pool all nominations for treasurer to make a combined list of candidates for both SPACE and MAST. Section 4. The officers shall be elected by a secret paper ballot, or by acclimation if only one person is running, to serve for one year, or until their successors are elected, and their term of office shall begin at the close of the annual meeting at which they are elected. However, the results of voting for the SPACE/ MAST treasurer will not be announced until after close of voting at the MAST meeting.

ARTICLE II OBJECT

The object of this club shall be to bring together those with a common interest to enhance their knowledge of computer technology by sharing hardware, software, and maintenance information collectively obtained in the field of Atari computers. ARTICLE Ill MEMBERSHIP

Section 1. The membership of this club shall not be limited. Section 2. Any computer owner or person interested in computers shall be eligible for membership upon payment of the annual dues for the first year. Section 3. The annual dues shall be 15 dollars, payable on the anniversary month of a member's joining date. The officers shall be elected by paper ballot to serve for one year, or _until their successors are elected, and their term of office shall begin at the close of the annual meeting at which they are elected. Section 6. The presidents and vicepresidents of SPACE and MAST shall . actively seek volunteers to fill the following positions for their respective groups: Secretary, Disk of the Month (DOM) Librarian, Paper & Educational Software Librarian, Bulletin Board Coordinator, and a common Newsletter Editor for both groups. These volunteers shall be subject to approval of the club membership. For service rendered these volunteers shall not be required to pay club dues during their term of office. ARTICLE V MEETINGS

Section 1. The regular meetings of SPACE and MAST shall be held on the second and

Page 6 third Fridays of each month, respectively, unless otherwise ordered by the club or the Executive Board. Section 2. The November meetings of SPACE and MAST shall be known as the Annual Meetings and shall be for the purpose of electing officers, receiving reports of officers and committees, and for any other business that may arise. Section 3. Special meetings can be called by the presidents or by the Executive Board and shall be called upon the written request of ten members of the club. The purpose of the meeting shall be stated in the call. Except in cases of emergency, at least three days notice shall be given. Section 4. Fifteen members of the club constitutes a quorum. Section 5. All regular and special meetings of the club shall be open meetings. Executive Board meetings are not open meetings. Section 6. Club DOMs will be sold at club meetings by the designated Disk(s) of the Month (DOM) Librarian(s), and the price of this software will be set by the elected officers of the respective groups. ARTICLE VI THE EXECUTIVE BOARD

Section 1. The President of SPACE, President of MAST, Vice-President of SPACE, Vice-President of MAST and Treasurer of SPACE/MAST shall constitute the Executive Board. Section 2. The Executive Board shall have general supervision of the affairs of the club between it's business meetings, fix the hour and place of the meetings, make recommendations to the club, and shall perform such other duties as are specified in the bylaws. The board shall be subject to the orders of the club, and none of its acts shall conflict with action taken by the club. ARTICLE VII COMMITTEES

Such other committees, standing or special, shall be appointed by the presidents or the Executive Board in order to carry on the work of the club. The presidents shall be exofficio members of all committees, except the nominating committees.

ARTICLE VIII PARLIAMENT ARY AUTHORITY

The rules contained in the current edition of Robert's rules of order newly revised shall govern the club in all cases to which they are applicable and in which they are not inconsistent with the bylaws and special rules of order the club may adopt. ARTICLE IX AMENDMENT OF BYLAWS

Section 1. These bylaws can be amended at any regular meeting(s) of the groups by a 2/3 vote of both groups, provided that the amendment has been submitted in writing at the previous regular meetings of both SPACE and MAST and printed in the newsletter Section 2. Voting shall be by paper ballot and will be tallied as the sum of the ballots collected from both group meetings in that month. ARTICLE X GENERAL

Section 1. No SPACE/MAST officer is paid for duties performed. With prior Executive Board approval ·out of pocket• expenses are paid upon submitting a bill or sales slip to the Treasurer. Section 2. No SPACE/MAST officer is paid. Compensation is one (1) free DOM each month. Additional DOMs are provided when there is more than one DOM per month, if the officer provides the DOM librarian with the blank media. SPACE/MAST elected officers are not required to pay membership dues. Upon termination of office dues are required. These dues will be calculated on a per month basis if a full term is not served. Section 3. No SPACE/MAST member shall sell or give SPACE or MAST disks of the month (DOMs) to any other person, bulletin board, or computer club. Individual programs may be shared with other persons, bulletin boards or computer clubs. All requests for SPACE/MAST DOM software will be authorized by the designated DOM librarian or SPACE/MAST officers. Section 4. SPACE and MAST disks of the month (DOM) may only be sold by those authorized to do so by the elected officers of SPACE or MAST. Other clubs may trade with SPACE/MAST on a one for one basis; disk for disk, or program for program.

Section 5. Any member found by the Executive Board to be in violation of these bylaws will be expelled from the club. No reimbursement of unused dues will be made. The member to be expelled has the right to a hearing at an Executive Board Meeting.

ST. PAUL ATARI COMPUTER ENTHUSIASTS & MINNESOTA ATARI ST

SPACE and MAST are independent user groups of owners of ATARI Home Computers. It has been organized by local owners of ATARI computers for the purpose of mutual self assistance and sharing of information. It is open to all interested computer enthusiasts. Benefits of memberships in the groups include monthly newsletter mailed to your home, BBS access, software demonstrations, group purchases, public domain disk(s) of the month software at low prices, reference book library, educational software library (8-bit only) with over 20 titles, personal contacts/learning, greater information and awareness on the world of ATARI, software at discounted prices from dealers, question and answer session, etc. Come to a meeting to find out more. SPACE • 8B11 Group The SPACE meetings are devoted primarily to the 8-bit ATARI computers such as the 400,800, GOOXL, 800XL, 65XE and 130XE. There is other ATARI related news and some 16-bit news at the SPACE meetings, as well. The SPACE group meets on the second Friday of each month at the Falcon Heights Community Center, 2077 West Larpenteur Avenue, at 7:30pm. Doors open at about 7:10pm. MAST· ST Group The MAST meetings are devoted primarily towards the ATARI 520ST, 1040ST & MEGA computers. There will be ATARI related news items covered, but not 8-bit news. The MAST group meets on the third Friday of each month at the Falcon Heights Community Center, 2077 West Larpenteur Avenue, at 7:30pm. Doors open at about 7:10pm. MAST+ • Programming Language User Sig MAST also has a programmer's group meeting. This group has a more technical discussion regarding programming the ST computers in a variety of languages. The group meets on the Monday following the MAST meeting at the First Minnesota bank on Lexington Avenue near Larpenteur Avenue. Meeting time is 7:30, with doors opening at about 7:20pm. The entrance is in the back of the building and leads to a stairway to the second floor.
